Are you searching for that breakthrough moment with “r” sound elicitation? Have you ever noticed how some words just seem to unlock a clearer “r” production for certain children?
Our R Facilitative Contexts product will help you discover those golden opportunities. This resource explains why specific word environments create the optimal conditions for “r” sound success, includes a comprehensive screener, therapy cards, and multiple high-trial practice sheets across different facilitative contexts (perfect for sessions or homework assignments).
An ideal foundation step before diving into traditional articulation or phonological “r” therapy approaches. Give children the chance to build confidence with their strongest “r” productions before expanding to more challenging contexts. Save yourself hours of preparation – everything is print-ready for immediate use in your sessions!
Is your child stuck after years of “r” therapy with little progress to show for it? Here’s a game-changer: instead of spending months on eliciting “r” in isolation, you can find words your child can already say correctly and build from there! These are called “facilitative contexts” – specific words where the “r” sound is naturally easier to produce. Picture your child’s excitement when they discover they can pronounce “r” words correctly right from day one!
How this resource works:
This approach eliminates frustrating isolation work and gets your child practicing real words from session one!
Can this resource help with vocalic /r/ (like in “car” or “her”)?
Yes! While this screener focuses on consonantal “r” sounds, it can serve as an excellent starting point and stepping stone for SLPs working with rhotic speakers. Our North American reviewers found that several contexts on the screener naturally facilitate vocalic “r” production, and the coarticulation opportunities (like pairing “car” with “rat” when initial low front vowel contexts prove successful) can expand “r” mastery across different phonetic environments.
Speech-language pathologists worldwide have reviewed these words to ensure they work across different dialects and accents, creating a logical pathway for generalizing “r” across different sound positions and types.
DOWNLOAD THIS RESOURCE IF YOU WANT TO:

I have been very pleasantly surprised by this resource. I usually am not a big digital product person because once I buy them I usually find something I don’t like about the design or the stimuli. This exceeded my expectations. I got it on sale but it was well worth the price. It has really helped some of my students immediately get correct, high trial practice. One group this week got over 260 trials a piece. Well done Rebekah and your team! Thanks for the resource.

I didn’t think I needed another R resource, but I’m glad I tried this! It’s been helpful to think about R in a different way when working with students that I feel like I’ve already tried everything else with. The cards are nice because the line up directly with the screener- you can go from the screener to practice super easily.

Teresa E. –
I love using facilitative context. These materials have helped clients have success from the start. Almost every client is able to produce the target sound in at least 1 context. “r” is still a hard phoneme but at least I am having more success during my therapy sessions using this material.

This has changed the way I’m going to approach this sound in the future and I highly recommend it. I’d tried finding facilitative words in the past (with little success) but this was so quick and easy use. By the 3rd session with a child, after they had practised the words they COULD say with the ‘r’ sound (and a bit of postive esteem building that they could achieve the sound- the child was aware of their ‘w’ error before starting therapy), the sound had generalised to all the other words on the context screener, including the often trickier word initial!
