Sometimes you need to teach the rule or the concept FIRST!

So with children who are stopping their fricatives, it might be helpful to draw their attention to how long or short sounds can be, and have them make decisions and judgments on these.

Here were threading some pasta to make a long necklace every time we hear that long sound. This makes the concept more meaningful to our kids 👏

Get out of your head that you HAVE TO get 80% accuracy at word level, and then move to the phrase level, and then the sentence level etc. when using minimal pairs.

Because you don’t. Many kids generalise to conversational speech even when you stick to the word level!!

Can you use phrases and sentences to help a child generalize? You can, BUT, first think about whether you are implementing minimal pairs the way the research has shown it to be effective 💪🏻

WHAT DOES MINIMAL PAIRS LOOK LIKE?

This is what a typical 30-minute session looks like for me (I work in private practice and have parents in my room).

1. I always start off with a quick check in how homework went. What worked, what didn’t work, any problems? Any successes?

1. My first activity is usually my longest! I try to get around 40 practices in a table-top activity.

2. I work with mostly preschoolers so I do a floor-based activity just to get out of our chairs. Aiming for another 30 or so practice trials.

3. I usually choose a simple activity that gets high practice trials: magnetic counters, my abacus, starting 100 trials sheets that I then give for homework.

4. I then wrap up (multi-tasking 🤪) playing with the child to hear if our targets are generalizing and organising homework for my parents.

Some of my kids are happy with 1-2 activities, some do better with 4-5 to keep up motivation and engagement.

Ask me a question 🙋🏻‍♀️ because this plan doesn’t always go to plan!!

Some kids… well, a LOT of kids need you to makes these abstract phonological concepts MEANINGFUL to help their learning.

Recently my Kindergartener wrote a speech about how our family was just like Bluey’s family.

And she was so right that her Dad was just like Bluey’s dad ❤️ I forever hear my girls squealing and shrieking as the play “stinky hands”, pop goes the weasel on the trampoline, and do robot walking and gymnastics in the basement. He also runs the best daddy nail salon in Newcastle 💅🏼
