It made me reflect on MY ROLE in understanding intervention intensity and commit to DOING BETTER to help my students progress in therapy.

How many trials should you be aiming for when you're working on a phonological disorder? Research gives us an average of around 100 trials per session, but we don't actually know what the optimal number is. And honestly, it's not that simple anyway. There are a lot of other factors at play too, including session length, how often you're seeing your client, and the approach you're using.

Lateralization is one of those things that can feel really tricky to correct. Before jumping to any elicitation tricks, my first step is always a facilitative contexts screener. Finding the right context first makes everything else so much easier.

Minimal pairs therapy is all about creating communication breakdowns, and showing how our words have meaning. To help this click for some students, each session I might take one pair and make an activity where the target word (e.g., snap) is the motivating and fun part!

Yep, feel that relief! You can carefully screen for possible facilitative contexts, and see if certain vowels or consonants can encourage (or facilitate) a clearer sound!

Have you ever used kinetic sand like this???

Here is a SIMPLE way to get x50 practice trials using one activity.

MATERIALS: container with kinetic sand, tweezers, x25 mini cards (this set is from the “sp” cycles packet available at Adventures in Speech Pathology shop).

I always aim for at least 100 correct practices, so this got us half way there 👏🏼

If your child says “side” for “slide” - try forward or backward chaining with visuals (as a first step). Visuals help the child break down and SEE the sounds in the words vs. just deleting them (especially when minimal pairs is not the right approach initially!!).

We created a HUMAN CYCLE in our face-to-face PD, “Which phonological intervention should I choose?” to help SLPs visualise and “see” what a cycle is.

Why? Well, I’m not sure about you, but I learn differently! For me to understand a phonological intervention, I need the information presented in different ways. Don’t just show me slides. Don’t just talk AT me for hours. Show me. Involve me.

Self-correction is a BIG milestone in my speech room. It shows me that the child is learning the sounds and the rules, and relying on me less to cue them 👏🏼

Don’t forget to check if your child knows and can perceive the difference between your error and the target sound when doing minimal pairs therapy.

It’s surprising how many kids I see who find this task difficult. Another thing I see is that they can hear the difference in other people, but not themselves.

You can’t always rush into therapy; sometimes, you just have to take the time at the start. BTW - Does anyone else use parents in therapy for this part?

Some children need few cues, some children need more cues. This is a new sound for us, and an important one because it’s in our name.

In this video I:
1. Asked the child to feel the sound on their lips
2. Gave a placement cue (teeth on the lips)
3. Reminded them to keep the airflow long
4. Used a gesture (cued articulation)

For a child who had no fricatives 4 months ago, we’ve worked hard on that airflow, and I know the combination of cues that work for them when we first start teaching (then I fade away)👏

Here’s some real-life clinical experience here:
✅ evaluate your student every 12 weeks/each school term/after after a therapy block to determine whether the therapy approach you have chosen is still “the most appropriate.”

Some interventions have a reason and a season, so it’s great to know when it’s time for something different 👌🏼

The three things I’m always considering are:

1. Has the child made EVEN MORE progress with their speech, even though they’ve had a break?
2. Has the child lost some of their accuracy from when I last saw them (this is okay - it just means we might have to do more home practice during breaks)
3. With my new information and fresh ears and eyes, should I continue with the same goals and therapy approaches, or do we need to change things up?

Honestly, I think every SLP should consider re-assessing their students after a school term/block of therapy to evaluate goals and intervention 👏🏼 what are your thoughts?
