I don`t think I`ll ever get used to reading reviews like this one.

An SLP working in a racially and ethnically diverse neighbourhood took the time to tell me something that means more to me than I probably show: her students are more responsive when the visuals in front of them actually look like them. That`s not a small observation. That`s a kid feeling like they belong in their own therapy session.

That`s exactly why I made the Speech Sound Mouth Cue Cards with a range of skin tones. Same clear articulatory cues you need for teaching correct placement, just built so every kid in your caseload can see themselves using them.

This is my best case scenario. Two sessions to properly assess articulation, and even then it doesn`t stop there.

I`ve learned that setting myself up for success in therapy starts with assessing deeply before I plan a single goal. A word list tells you a sound is in error. It doesn`t tell you why, or what`s going to move that child forward.

The stimulability probe tells me if a child can produce the sound with support. The facilitative context screener shows me which environments already make it easier for them. And often, once I`ve looked at all of this, I`m also asking whether language and literacy need a closer look too.

It`s more time upfront. It`s also the difference between a plan that actually fits the child and one that`s guesswork.

How are you structuring your artic assessments right now?

So I pulled together a bunch of low prep ways to turn everyday stuff (think clothespins, pom poms, tweezers, mini toys) into artic practice that kids actually want to keep doing. My Articulation Squares get a lot of love in this one too. They're an easy and compact way to keep kids engaged while still hitting a ton of trials.

I can`t stop talking about this resource!! It saves me in therapy ALL THE TIME. The second I get that side eye from a client when I pull out the same old articulation cards, this is what I reach for, and it`s like getting a whole new student.

That switch happens because the Articulation Squares aren`t just another flashcard deck. Each grid comes with a mouth cue card built right into the middle, so your student has a visual reminder of exactly where their articulators need to go, and the words around it give you plenty to work with in every sound and position, initial, medial, final, and mixed.
