If you child deletes the second consonant sound in a cluster, you may need to work on that smaller word chunk (e.g., “lice”), and THEN try adding the /s/ at the start to make the cluster.

Learning a new sound can be hard! Even though we didn’t practice this sound too much in isolation (I moved onto syllables and words very quickly), I think they were working so hard trying to cue themselves to use the “k” sound, that they kept saying the sound in isolation… then the rest of the word.

Saying it fast helped 👏🏼

The fourth leg of our “Which Phonological Intervention Should I Choose?” tour in Perth was AMAZING!

I was so impressed with the WA speech pathologists!! The kids are lucky to have you all supporting their speech sound development 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Do you see how we had to use visuals to try to help the child HEAR the difference in the sounds by SEEING the difference?

Have you ever worked on or seen this before?

Have you ever had a child do this?
I find holding up the mouth cues to SHOW the child the sound can really help 👏🏼

What are your thoughts about this??

Being a parent to a child with speech sound errors, I am guided by HER and how SHE FEELS about her speech.

I told myself I won’t “make her” come to therapy if she is happy with how she sounds.

Sometimes our students need to “see” what they’re doing with their tongue 👅 and then you can find the right cues that help them with new tongue placement!

Do you relate? Were you told to start an assessment speaking to the parents and getting a case history first?

That doesn’t work for me 🙃

1️⃣ We started with opening the mouth
2️⃣ Accepted a throaty sound and shaped it into a softer sound
3️⃣ Next we cued the child to say it faster 🤗

Make sure you follow AISP for all our speech elicitation tips!

Has this ever worked for you? Have you elicited a “y” starting with the “ee” vowel?

Who says assessments have to be dry and boring??

The amount of laughter we get imitating these animals as part of our oral motor assessment is soooooo good for rapport building!!

Do you send video clips to parents and carers? I’ve found it can be particularly helpful at the beginning of therapy when the child is still learning about their sounds and we want to reinforce consistent cues that work in our therapy session, in the home environment.

Description

We’re all familiar with common phonological patterns such as fronting and stopping… but have you ever tried to find materials for less common phonological patterns and have failed to find anything?

This bundle targets less common phonological patterns: initial consonant deletion, deaffrication, ‘s’ cluster reduction to ‘s’, s-th substitution, ‘l’ cluster reduction, and th-f fricative simplification.

The Minimal Pairs Toolkit Bundle is based on the evidence but driven by real-life clinical practice from an SLP who solely treats speech sound disorders and knows the roadblocks all SLPs face when trying to implement minimal pairs!

“This is my go to resource! Students love the stories and the discrimination. I don’t just use these for my phonology students, I use them for students working on articulation skills as well! Very child friendly and engaging!”

If you have you ever tried minimal pairs therapy and found that your students don’t understand what you are asking them to do, our answer is a fun story that explains their speech patterns in a child-friendly manner (e.g., introducing the idea of “windy vs. exploding sounds” and the “snake out of the cage” sound), and then pairs it with visuals and concepts that you can use to cue your student throughout the therapy process.

⭐ If you are looking for materials featuring more common phonological patterns (fronting, gliding, voicing, final consonant deletion, ‘s’ cluster reduction, stopping) check out the original Minimal Pairs Toolkit Bundle

Have you ever tried minimal pairs therapy for common phonological patterns and found that your students don’t understand what you are asking them to do? What if you could read your student a story that explains their speech errors in a child-friendly manner (e.g., introducing the idea of “snake out of the cage sounds” and “starting and hiding sounds”), and then pair it with visuals and concepts that you can use to cue your student throughout the therapy process.

What SLP’s like you are saying:
I use these cards all the time! This has made it so much easier for me to use minimal pairs with my speech sound disorder students. I would highly recommend this bundle!

Love love that this resource has been created for the less common patterns and now I have an easy go to when planning sessions such as “s cluster to s”

Thanks so much for making this resource. It is really helpful to have resources surrounding these less common errors. I certainly have kids with these error patterns on my caseload, so it is great to have a resource at my fingertips. Saves me so much time. And allows practice at home too with really motivating Boom Cards. Thanks
