Fun fact: my colleagues literally hear me through the walls 😂

Who said you have to work on “r” in initial position FIRST?

By choosing where the child can say a clearer, more accurate “r”, we were able to start therapy successfully and accurately (and those other “r” positions are correcting on their own!!).

Have you ever had more success in “r” clusters?

We usually tell parents of LATE TALKERS to pause, but I encourage parents of children with speech sound delays to pause too!!!

Yes, this child still needed a zebra cue, but often we have to build these steps to foster self-awareness so our kids can fix their speech.

Shoutout to this mum who was better than me at demonstrating many of these 😂 I can’t tell you how LESS SCARY an oral motor exam is when everyone gets involved.

I’m using our @bjoremspeech Oral Motor Assessment cards.

Want some MOTIVATION? Get a dinosaur who ONLY eats “back /k/“ sounds!!! Your preschoolers will be more engaged to fix and clarify whether they meant “tape” or “cape” if they can see the dinosaur eat the card 🦖

As much as possible, I try NOT TO MODEL THE WORD during an assessment so that the child isn’t directly imitating me (which can influence my results).

Are there are other tips you recommend?

Hey, hi, g’day!! I’m Rebecca and I’ve been a speech pathologist for 17 years.

I was thinking recently about “career statements” and what makes me passionate about this job. And put really simply:

I love to work with preschool-aged children to help them be 100% clear and intelligible by the time they start formal schooling.

Do you have a “why” 👇🏼

I’d love to know if there are other differing or similar opinions?

Prove me wrong!!! Because (unless you read it in our Ch & J Handbook), I bet you have never tried this before to elicit the “ch” sound!!!

Also - tag an SLP who needs to know this 👏🏼

The three things I’m always considering are:

1. Has the child made EVEN MORE progress with their speech, even though they’ve had a break?
2. Has the child lost some of their accuracy from when I last saw them (this is okay - it just means we might have to do more home practice during breaks)
3. With my new information and fresh ears and eyes, should I continue with the same goals and therapy approaches, or do we need to change things up?

Honestly, I think every SLP should consider re-assessing their students after a school term/block of therapy to evaluate goals and intervention 👏🏼 what are your thoughts?

It’s about time that non-rhotic “r” speaking countries had some “r” materials that work with OUR accents 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

We’re looking to expand our best-selling Facilitative Contexts packets with a non-rhotic “r” version! Comment “list” so I can send a DM on how to apply.

Connecting and collaborating with SLPs around the world is so important to us (especially as I have studied and worked in 4 countries myself!!!).

Description

Have you ever tried minimal pairs therapy for ‘s’ blend cluster reduction to ‘s’ (e.g., ‘slip’ is ‘sip’) and found that your students don’t understand what you are asking them to do?

What makes this therapy resource unlike any other is the phonological pattern stories, which explain the student’s pattern in a child-friendly manner that makes sense and “clicks” for them (e.g., “sound buddies” and “no sound buddies”).

“My students love the stories! I use them individually on the iPad, but I also use them on the TV screen with a small group. I always have great success with this product!!!”

As an SLP who only treats speech sound disorders, I have created the ultimate “research-meets-clinical practice” resource, combining EVERYTHING you need (and didn’t know that you needed) to effectively implement the minimal pairs approach and make progress week-by-week.

DOWNLOAD THIS RESOURCE IF YOU WANT TO:
❶ — Have one resource that contains ALL the minimal steps: familiarization, auditory discrimination tasks and practice using minimal pair contrasts
❷ — Be able to “teach the rule” about cluster reduction using our highly reviewed stories that “click” for students
❸ — Save planning time by referring to our therapy activity ideas to help teach the concept of “sound buddies”
❹ — Have a set of high-quality minimal cards
❺ — Choose between print or digital formats! Our story, familiarization and auditory discrimination tasks give you TWO options!

“I love that this resource includes the story to help introduce the metaphor to students. I own many of these minimal pair toolkits and find them very helpful to implement the minimal pairs approach with students.”

How does the Minimal Pairs Toolkit work?

FIRST Read the child-friendly “My Sound Buddies Story” and complete the hands-on learning activities so that your student “clicks” with the phonological rule
NEXT By using the print or digital version, complete familiarization and auditory discrimination activities so that your students understand and can hear the difference between the pairs.
THEN Use these Sound Buddy and No Sound Buddy concepts as cues as you engage in drill-play games using the beautifully illustrated minimal pairs cards.

“These are exactly what I needed! It is so hard to find minimal pairs that also have teacher guidance and great images for the students! I bought several items just like this from this store!!”

“This has been SUCH a helpful resource!! My kids love talking about their “sound buddies” – it was a perfect way to make a somewhat abstract concept more concrete, especially for my Kindergarten students. I loved it so much, I want to buy the whole bundle now!”

“I love all the minimal pairs tool kits and was happy to find this additional option for s-blends. It has been great to have a resource that is specific to cluster reduction to /s/. It’s difficult to find minimal pairs for this error pattern.”
