If you child deletes the second consonant sound in a cluster, you may need to work on that smaller word chunk (e.g., “lice”), and THEN try adding the /s/ at the start to make the cluster.

Learning a new sound can be hard! Even though we didn’t practice this sound too much in isolation (I moved onto syllables and words very quickly), I think they were working so hard trying to cue themselves to use the “k” sound, that they kept saying the sound in isolation… then the rest of the word.

Saying it fast helped 👏🏼

I was so impressed with the WA speech pathologists!! The kids are lucky to have you all supporting their speech sound development 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Shoutout to the team: Paul and Amanda for getting this event off the ground and looking after everyone so well.

Do you see how we had to use visuals to try to help the child HEAR the difference in the sounds by SEEING the difference?

Have you ever worked on or seen this before?

Have you ever had a child do this?
I find holding up the mouth cues to SHOW the child the sound can really help 👏🏼

What are your thoughts about this??

Being a parent to a child with speech sound errors, I am guided by HER and how SHE FEELS about her speech.

I told myself I won’t “make her” come to therapy if she is happy with how she sounds.

Sometimes our students need to “see” what they’re doing with their tongue 👅 and then you can find the right cues that help them with new tongue placement!

Do you relate? Were you told to start an assessment speaking to the parents and getting a case history first?

That doesn’t work for me 🙃

1️⃣ We started with opening the mouth
2️⃣ Accepted a throaty sound and shaped it into a softer sound
3️⃣ Next we cued the child to say it faster 🤗

Make sure you follow AISP for all our speech elicitation tips!

Has this ever worked for you? Have you elicited a “y” starting with the “ee” vowel?

Who says assessments have to be dry and boring??

The amount of laughter we get imitating these animals as part of our oral motor assessment is soooooo good for rapport building!!

Do you send video clips to parents and carers? I’ve found it can be particularly helpful at the beginning of therapy when the child is still learning about their sounds and we want to reinforce consistent cues that work in our therapy session, in the home environment.

Description

Does your student exhibit fricative simplification (saying “f” for “th”) such as “free” for “three” and you need high-quality minimal pair cards? What if your students don’t understand what you are asking them to do?

Imagine if you could read your student a story that explains their speech errors in a child-friendly manner (introducing the idea of biting and tickling sounds), and then pair it with visuals and concepts that you can use to cue your student throughout the therapy process.

“I used the resource one time with a kiddo and I got a look of “ah hah” on their face!”

As an SLP who only treats speech sound disorders, I have created the ultimate “research-meets-clinical practice” resource, combining EVERYTHING you need (and didn’t know that you needed) to effectively implement the minimal pairs approach and make progress week-by-week.

DOWNLOAD THIS RESOURCE IF YOU WANT TO:
❶ — Have one resource that contains ALL the minimal steps: familiarization, auditory discrimination tasks and practice using minimal pair contrasts
❷ — Be able to “teach the rule” for fricative simplification using our highly reviewed stories that “click” for students
❸ — Save planning time by referring to our therapy activity ideas to help teach the concept of “My Biting & Tickling Sounds” sounds
❹ — Have a set of high-quality minimal cards
❺ — Choose between print or digital formats! Our story, familiarization and auditory discrimination tasks give you TWO options!

How does the Minimal Pairs Toolkit work?

FIRST Read the child-friendly “My Biting & Tickling Sounds” story and complete the hands-on learning activities so that your student “clicks” with the phonological rule.
NEXT By using the print or digital version, complete familiarization and auditory discrimination activities so that your students understand and can hear the difference between the pairs.
THEN Use these “biting” and “tickling” concepts as cues as you engage in drill-play games using the beautifully illustrated minimal pairs cards.

DID YOU KNOW that this resource is part of a six-series bundle? You get a discount when you purchase the complete Minimal Pairs Toolkit for Less Common Patterns!
