With so many phonological intervention approaches With so many phonological intervention approaches out there… how do you know if your child is suitable for an approach?

@grahamspeechtherapy and I are writing the cycles version of this page (from the Minimal Pairs Handbook) so that you can feel a little more confident from the START knowing if an intervention is suitable 👏

I “collect” different cues because one doesn’t work for every child.

This is why I always find it hard to answer “how do you teach the ‘s’ sound”.

I usually have my three fave cues that I always use, and then depending on how the child responds… I go into my bag of tricks and try different cues.

(BTW I’m using a train metaphor to teach cluster reduction in this picture).

Seriously can’t get enough of these animal faces Seriously can’t get enough of these animal faces 🐰🐮🦁🐯🐱🐤

These speech sound cues are the metaphor versions (I’ve also included a phonetic cues version), and where possible, I’ve tried to be as alliterative as possible:

🐶 ‘d’ is the digging dog sound
🐯 ‘t’ is the tiptoeing tiger sound
🐧 ‘p’ is the popping penguin sound
🐱 ‘k’ is the coughing cat sound

Which is your favourite?
I’m still a sucker for the bunny teeth sound for ‘f’ 🐰

She loved picking up every animal speech sound cue and I was able to do a quick probe of every consonant. It was nice to to get an understanding of her speech sound inventory 😊

My beautiful city ❤️ Did you know that I’m My beautiful city ❤️

Did you know that I’m from Sydney but…

1. I now live in Newcastle
2. I studied a year of my degree in Manchester, UK
3. My first job was in a rural-remote location (Emerald, QLD)
4. I worked as an SLP in Samoa
5. I also lived in Washington State for two years as a school-based SLP

Since having kiddies I DO miss my adventures… might have to drag them along with me 😉

If your child has difficulty getting their tongue If your child has difficulty getting their tongue “back” for /k/ and /g/, sometimes I’ll start with saying “aah”.

It’s a back vowel, so I like getting the tongue in a back position, then I might see if we can keep our mouth open and move the back of the tongue “aaaahhh…k”.

It’s not the only tip for those velar sounds, but something I always try 👏

Has this worked for you??

Do you ever “play around” with vowel sounds to Do you ever “play around” with vowel sounds to see whether a particular vowel or syllable structure will facilitate a target sound?

When I am JUST STARTING with a sound, I like to figure out sounds that HELP and sounds that HINDER the production.

For example, “lee” and “la” can be a good place to start for /l/, but “low” and “loo” maybe not if the child is gliding (this would encourage lip rounding).

We might only practice syllables for a week or two (and sometimes we skip this!) but it can help to “write a new plan” for saying the sound.

I’ve been using the complexity approach and chos I’ve been using the complexity approach and chosen /sl/ for a little one who was NOT stimulable for their /l/ sound.

We tried plain old /sl/ targets, but their /l/ was just letting them down.

So for x2 sessions we BROKE THAT CLUSTER DOWN. We practiced that /l/ word on its own, tapping on the pictures as went went.

Once we mastered that /l/ word, using /sl/ clusters was so much easier using forward and backward chaining 👏👏👏 the child could SEE the parts of the word and put them together much easier!
