What types of cues did you see us use to get a clear “ch” sound?

1️⃣ the primary cue was a gestural cue - this helped to get a strong, long sound
2️⃣ we also included some verbal feedback about “round lips”

Just another reminder about the importance of layering your cues - and how every child will require different cues!

Find all the cues to elicit the “ch” sound in the Ch & J Sound Handbook 💪🏼

Why am I late with my Bjorem Speech Cruise recaps? Who’s got time to splice these together when you’re laughing, connecting, and gathering 100ish talkative SLPs together?!

Special mention to our keynote speaker, the incredible @phuonglienpalafox, my SLP besties @rocktherspeech, @freetobeme.speech and @mrsspeechiep - and the entire @bjoremspeech team who made this possible.

I was sleep deprived, time zone confused and a little overwhelmed at presenting in front of REAL LIFE SLPs for the first time in my career.

I love that the 2024 Bjorem Cruise 🚢 and Jen from @bjoremspeech offered me an opportunity and the right song to just make me feel like I could do this!

Can’t wait for next week!! I’ll be presenting about something I’m passionate about: getting high practice trials in speech therapy for working with SSDs.

You don’t HAVE TO ELICIT A SOUND IN ISOLATION FIRST 😅

Yep, feel that relief! You can carefully screen for possible facilitative contexts, and see if certain vowels or consonants can encourage (or facilitate) a clearer sound!

#adventuresinspeechpathology #speechsounds #speechsounddisorders #speechdelay #articulation
I’ve updated my vocabulary (part of being a Know Better, Do Better SLP).

The last one (swapping “correct” for “clear”) is a personal choice after reflecting on my own child’s speech journey.

What words have you changed?

#articulation #speechsounddisorders #speechsounds #speechdelay #schoolslp #adventuresinspeechpathology
If you child deletes the second consonant sound in a cluster, you may need to work on that smaller word chunk (e.g., “lice”), and THEN try adding the /s/ at the start to make the cluster.

Description

This simple, informal screener is a fantastic addition to your speech assessment toolkit because it quickly allows you to get an understanding of your student’s syllable structure capabilities. For each sound, you will have pictures for C – CV – VC – CVC – CVCV so that you can start to get a deeper look at any possible syllables restraints.

Save money and get in a BUNDLE with my Oral Motor Assessment Cards

You might find it particularly useful for students who you suspect have Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), young children who are still developing their speech system, or those with highly unintelligible speech. A form is included so that you can phonetically transcribe or check off sounds that were made. Please note that transcriptions are NOT included, just the word with space to write down your own observations.

⭐ BOTH digital and a paper version is included for flexible use and on-the-go use!⭐

That’s right, while it’s super easy to print, laminate and attach a ring binder clip for easy flipping, a separate PDF file has been added focusing on one sound strip per page to upload to your device. This is especially useful for your shy students, mobile therapists or students who respond better to digital presentations.

=====================================
CONTENTS:
✅ — 21 strips focusing on the following consonant sounds: p, b, m, n, y,w, h, t, d, k, g, f, s, l, sh, z, j, ch, r, v and th.
✅ — The sounds are based on developmental acquisition of speech sounds, so you can always stop at a certain point if you don’t expect a student to have acquired a sound
✅ — All images are in color – fitting 4 strips to a page. This means that they are not big and bulky – they save ink in printing being more long and slim.
✅ — C – CV – VC – CVC – CVCV are included. Please note that the ‘C’ is a visual image of the mouth. There are some sounds that do not have words for some positions (e.g. VC for ‘h’).
✅ — The ‘digitial’ version has 21 slides as they focus on one sound per page. You may still need to print the record sheets from the other document.
✅ — A record sheet is included so that you can make notes about the child’s production.

7 reviews for Informal Syllable Structure Screener

  1. Alexandra Robilliard (verified owner)

I have found this incredibly useful for the little ones on my caseload (2-3) years. There are 3-4 pictures per page so it’s not too overwhelming and the pictures are engaging. This is my go too if I suspect CAS as it allows a good first look at syllable structure without being too time consuming to administer. I’ve used the picture cards for therapy too!

  2. Carlie R. (verified owner)

Easy way to test stimulability in all word positions / word shapes. I like this resource for my kids with severe phono errors or apraxia

  3. Laura G. (verified owner)

This resource is amazing! So quick and easy to use, but thorough! My students enjoyed being able to click through the resource with the errors on the digital version.

  4. Kelsey S. (verified owner)
