If you child deletes the second consonant sound in a cluster, you may need to work on that smaller word chunk (e.g., “lice”), and THEN try adding the /s/ at the start to make the cluster.

Learning a new sound can be hard! Even though we didn’t practice this sound too much in isolation (I moved onto syllables and words very quickly), I think they were working so hard trying to cue themselves to use the “k” sound, that they kept saying the sound in isolation… then the rest of the word.

Saying it fast helped 👏🏼

Do you see how we had to use visuals to try to help the child HEAR the difference in the sounds by SEEING the difference?

Have you ever worked on or seen this before?

Have you ever had a child do this?
I find holding up the mouth cues to SHOW the child the sound can really help 👏🏼

What are your thoughts about this??

Being a parent to a child with speech sound errors, I am guided by HER and how SHE FEELS about her speech.

I told myself I won’t “make her” come to therapy if she is happy with how she sounds.

Sometimes our students need to “see” what they’re doing with their tongue 👅 and then you can find the right cues that help them with new tongue placement!

Do you relate? Were you told to start an assessment speaking to the parents and getting a case history first?

That doesn’t work for me 🙃

1️⃣ We started with opening the mouth
2️⃣ Accepted a throaty sound and shaped it into a softer sound
3️⃣ Next we cued the child to say it faster 🤗

Has this ever worked for you? Have you elicited a “y” starting with the “ee” vowel?

Who says assessments have to be dry and boring??

The amount of laughter we get imitating these animals as part of our oral motor assessment is soooooo good for rapport building!!

Do you send video clips to parents and carers? I’ve found it can be particularly helpful at the beginning of therapy when the child is still learning about their sounds and we want to reinforce consistent cues that work in our therapy session, in the home environment.

Description

Do you need a quick reference chart or poster that shows common phonological patterns (processes) and their approximate ages of suppression? Would you like a simpler way to describe phonological patterns with parents and teachers?

DOWNLOAD these sheets if you want to:
❶ — Feel more confident describing and explaining phonological patterns
❷ — Have a quick reference to approximate ages of suppression broken down by age.
❸ — Display informative poster in your speech therapy room
❹ — Have a list of journal articles where these norms and data were taken from to further your reading.

The Phonological Patterns Chart is a resource that SLPs will constantly be referring to, to support their pediatric caseload. It is the same style and design as the popular Speech Development Chart (for typical speech sound acquisition).

Product is part of a discounted SPEECH CHART BUNDLE of high-quality charts, posters, and infographics

This chart is an engaging addition to your speech pathology office or waiting room. You can also print out the black and white version to use as screening or assessing stimulability.

PRINTING OPTIONS:
❶ — You can take the Phonological Pattern Chart to a local print or office supplies shop to be printed as poster size. I have successfully printed the poster at A1 size.
❷ — Print as regular paper-sized and laminate for durability. It is great to pull out of a folder to reference.
❸ — Print the black & option and attach it to a report or use it for screening purposes.

  1. Louise Terley (verified owner)

As a student speech pathologist, this chart provides me with a visually inviting reference to easily identify age-appropriate speech sound disorders. Additionally, it offers parents a straightforward and clear overview. The inclusion of phonological pattern names, accompanied by example words, enhances its utility. It’s an excellent resource suitable for printing in a large format and I can’t wait to have my own clinic room to display it in. Thank you!

  2. Becky (verified owner)

I have both the speech sound development chart and the phonological patterns chart and reference both with parents constantly! I love how Rebecca explains what patterns are and how children make these rule-governed mistakes.

I have this on my wall in my clinic room. I love it- it is so great to have a visual to support discussions with parents about speech development/phonological processes.
