Teach “k” and “g” sounds with this tongue

I always say that no one cue works for every child, so here is another idea for eliciting a β€œk” or β€œg” sound for you to try!

As SLPs know, it is common for children to lift the front of their tongue and say /t/ instead of lifting the back of their tongue to say /k/. But what happens if looking at your mouth or using a picture cue is not clear enough for them?

MAKE A TONGUE TO SHOW THE MOVEMENT

You can use goo or play dough to make a big tongue! It is easy to shape and big enough to catch the child’s attention. You can use it to show what they are doing now (lifting the tip of the tongue) and what you want them to do (lift the back of the tongue).

You can hold it next to your mouth for a front on view or hold so the child can see from the side.

Have fun by using the goo or play dough tongue with a mouth model, puppet or your hand. You can even get the child to make the tongue themselves!

Check out my YouTube clip HERE where I explain this elicitation tip in more detail.

And if this tip didn’t work for your child, you can check out over 100 cues for eliciting the “k” and “g” sounds in our comprehensive K & G Sound Handbook.
