Whenever I start minimal pairs therapy, I always r Whenever I start minimal pairs therapy, I always review the meaning of the target words so that if my child says the word their OLD way - I can draw attention that it doesn’t make sense and see if they can fix the communication breakdown.

In this video I draw the waves and a fin in the ocean so that if my child says “bin” I can act confused, maybe draw a bin in the ocean, and ask if dolphins have a bin on their back.

This type of feedback helps the child understand that their words have meaning!

This is why I LOVE minimal pairs and is also why I DON’T use cycles for my mild or moderate kids. The power of this feedback can just make things CLICK 👏

I was playing trivia last night at the pub, and so I was playing trivia last night at the pub, and someone at the table told me that their 5 year old grandson was “lazy” because he dropped the /s/ sound off of his words (cluster reduction).

😥😥😥😥😥😥😥

My kids aren’t lazy.

They just need someone to help them figure out the rules and organise their speech sound system.

I wish that I had these one page handouts so I could explain why he was doing what he was doing, and change the perception about his speech.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

🎶 Background noise at the museum 🎶 But just 🎶 Background noise at the museum 🎶

But just thought I’d flip through one of my Interactive Boom Card Decks for working on:
1. Final consonant deletion
2. Using the minimal pairs approach

The sentences and background pictures help kids understand the MEANING behind the words we are teaching, so that if they don’t say their word correctly, we can DRAW THE CHILD’S ATTENTION to this and see if they can repair the breakdown in communication!

I have a free th-f version, so make sure to check this out in my store 😁

A note that I handed home today!! When I’m righ A note that I handed home today!!

When I’m right at the start of therapy, I try to find just ONE word that the child can say correctly, and have them practice for homework!!!

Why?

I would rather they practice one word correctly all week, than practice 9 words INCORRECTLY (and one of them correct!)

Hoping to o add some more words next week!!

BTW: these reminders are FREE in my store!!

Yesterday was my first day after a three week brea Yesterday was my first day after a three week break! Gosh I missed my kids!

And while I was so curious “how they went” and if they consolidated their patterns more (many do!!), some didn’t.

And that’s okay 😁 it just gives me more information about my kids.

Definitely my favourite age to treat! 1️⃣ It Definitely my favourite age to treat!

1️⃣ It becomes more obvious what phonological patterns the child is having difficulty with
2️⃣ more sounds are likely to be stimulable
3️⃣ attention and motivation is less variable than when they are 3
4️⃣ conversation samples are easier to take, and I find it easier to judge intelligibility in conversation

BASICALLY - it’s a great age to START therapy if you haven’t already!!

Do you have a fave age?

2. Sh sound (not lateral sh though)
3. Final Consonant Deletion (it’s fun!)
4. Affricates (it’s all in the force!)
5. Fronting (I like the minimal pair targets!)
